The average residential electric bill is based on the amount of electricity used during each billing period. By reducing energy use, most households can lower monthly electric bills.

Many members can reduce their electricity costs by applying simple energy-saving practices and making efficiency improvements.

Note: Average residential electric usage is typically divided into the following categories:

Heating and air conditioning — approximately 45%
Lighting, cooking, and appliances — approximately 34%
Water heating — approximately 13%
Refrigeration — approximately 8%

Heating and cooling account for the largest portion of your home’s energy use. Making small adjustments to your HVAC system can help reduce energy consumption and lower your electric bill.

Set your thermostat to 78°F for cooling. Each degree cooler can increase energy use by about 8%.
Set your thermostat to 68°F for heating. Each degree warmer increases energy use by approximately 6%.
Only heat or cool your home when it is occupied. Adjust settings when you leave and reset when you return.
Check thermostat accuracy by comparing it with a separate thermometer.
Replace air filters regularly, typically once a month.
Schedule HVAC maintenance once or twice a year.
Inspect ductwork for leaks and proper insulation.
Ensure your attic has adequate insulation. DOE recommends R-49 for this region.
Check doors and windows for air leaks and seal gaps.
Keep vents and interior doors open for proper airflow.
Turn off ceiling fans when leaving the room.
Choose a higher SEER rating when replacing your system for better efficiency.

Small changes in how you use lighting and household appliances can help reduce energy use and lower your electric bill.

Turn off lights when rooms are not in use.
Use energy-efficient lighting such as LED or fluorescent bulbs.
Avoid pre-washing dishes and run full loads in the dishwasher.
Clean the dryer lint filter before every load.
Use cold water settings when washing clothes.
Use a microwave instead of an oven when possible.
Keep oven doors closed during use.
Do not place aluminum foil on the bottom of the oven.
Cook with lids on pots and pans.
Use glass or ceramic cookware when possible.
Cover or close exhaust fans when not in use.
Unplug electronics and appliances that are not in use.

Refrigerators and freezers run continuously, making them an important part of your home’s energy use. Proper settings and simple habits can help improve efficiency and reduce energy costs.

Set your refrigerator temperature between 36°F and 38°F.
Set your freezer temperature between 0°F and 5°F.
Keep food and liquids covered to improve efficiency.
